He was born in London in 1660 into a Puritan family and led a life full of interesting and important events. He was educated in one of the best dissenting academies where he studied practical subjects, as well as traditional ones. Though his father wanted a religious career for him, he became a prolific writer. He started writing in Whig newspapers, but his greatest achievement was The Review, a periodical which he published from 1704 to 1713. He wrote political essays and pamphlets until Queen Anne had him arrested, tried and imprisoned because she didn’t like his critical attitude towards the government. In order to be freed, he was forced to deny his Whig ideas and became a secret agent for the new government. His political inclinations too, Tory or Whig, changed rapidly according to hopes of preferment and enrichment, and it seems he served as a spy for both parties. He started writing novels when he was sixty, and he was extremely successful. He published his first novel, Robinson Crusoe, in 1719. Though still haunted by his creditors, he could afford a comfortable life, thanks to the money he made from his novels.
