You have 8 apples(8x) and 5 oranges(5y), then take away one apple(-x) and 2 oranges(-2y).
What do you have ?
The answer would be 7x+3y.
The reason for this, is because you have to combine the "like" terms (8x goes with -x; -2y goes with 5y).
