This is not a calculus question. It is algebra.
There will only be an answer in this case when -5 < x < 3. You can convince yourself of that graphically. You have two V-shaped functions touching the x axis at x = -5 and x = 3. They have mutually parallel sides and they only intersect in one place.
In that region between -5 and +3, the equation becomes
3 - 2x - 2x -5 = 0
4x = -2
Therefore,
x = -1/2
