I urgently need you to revise this paragraph on dinosaurs. I need to simplify it using synonyms.

1) Whatever killed off (synonym??) the dinosaurs almost certainly had a bearing (I need a proper synonym) on the rest of the mass extinction, which was on a global scale and affected the flora and the fauna in both the terrestrial and the marine environments.
2) Some scientists believe the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs was volcanic in origin whereas others believe it came from space.
2)The former suggested that a set of supervolcanic eruptions could have caused a change to the global environment.
3) The latter believed that the Earth was hit by a giant asteroid, causing firestorms and kicking up (I need a synonym) so much dust that it cut out sunlight and caused a prolonged winter period.
