These two awards are usually reserved for high school graduating classes. The student with the highest GPA throughout high school is designated valedictorian. The student with the second highest GPA throughout high school is designated salutatorian.

The Valedictorian and Salutatorian awards are academic honors typically given to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in high school. While these awards are commonly associated with high school graduations, they are not typically awarded in middle school or for 8th graders.

To become a Valedictorian or Salutatorian, students often need to meet specific criteria set by their school or educational institution. While the specific requirements may vary, they generally involve a combination of factors such as:

1. Grade Point Average (GPA): Most schools consider a student's GPA as the primary criteria for determining the Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Typically, the student with the highest GPA becomes the Valedictorian, while the student with the second-highest GPA becomes the Salutatorian.

2. Course Load: Students who challenge themselves by taking advanced or honors courses are often given additional weight or extra points when calculating their GPA. This encourages academic rigor and recognizes students who have taken on more challenging coursework.

3. Class Rank: In some schools, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian may be determined based on a student's class rank, which is their position among their peers based on their GPA. The student with the highest class rank becomes the Valedictorian, while the second-highest becomes the Salutatorian.

4. Curriculum Requirements: Schools may have specific curriculum requirements that students must fulfill to be eligible for these awards. These requirements often include completing a certain number of credits and specific courses.

It's important to note that the criteria for Valedictorian and Salutatorian can vary from school to school. It's best to consult your school's policy or guidelines to understand the specific requirements to achieve these awards in your educational institution.
