Antigone is the true tragic hero because she acts without anticipating the consequences of her rebellion, realizes she has made an irreversible mistake only after it is too late to fix it, and is responsible for an unhappy ending for all of the characters.

This is my thesis. I have to write a persuasive essay on how Antigone is the true tragic hero, not Creon.

I have to write a counter argument on Creon but I'm not sure if I am supposed to include this in my thesis?

Also I need more evidence for these three reasons! Help?
she acts without anticipating the consequences of her rebellion
Reason: She goes and tries to bury her brother without thinking what will happen to her.
- She does what is right and doesn't care about what others think of her
- opposite of Ismene who tries to think things out

realizes she has made an irreversible mistake only after it is too late to fix it
- she starts off by being very confident and self assured
- she does what she believes is right
- she starts to regret this because she wont be able to marry Haemon or have a family

is responsible for an unhappy ending for all of the characters.
- Haemon kills himself
- After Haemon kills himself, his mother commits suicide
-Creon is left alone

Counter Arguement-
Creon is the tragic hero because he has lost everything. He looses his whole family due to the fact that he is a hubris.
how would i prove this wrong?

Essay is due tomorrow!
Please help! thanks! :D

I've always thought of Creon as the nearest thing to a villain in Greek drama! You would have a stronger paper if you use your idea of his being a tragic hero as your thesis.

I've also never found any place in that play where Antigone "realizes she has made an irreversible mistake."

I think it is too late to change my thesis...

"realizes she has made an irreversible mistake" came from my teacher...

Your thesis states that Antigone is the true tragic hero in the play, not Creon. When writing a persuasive essay, it is generally not necessary to include the counter-argument within your thesis statement. The counter-argument is typically presented in a separate paragraph to acknowledge the opposing viewpoint and then refuted with evidence and reasoning.

To provide more evidence for your three reasons why Antigone is the true tragic hero, consider the following:

1. She acts without anticipating the consequences of her rebellion:
- In addition to going against the law by burying her brother, Antigone also ignores warnings from several characters, including Ismene and the Chorus, about the potential consequences of her actions. This demonstrates her strong sense of individual convictions and her willingness to accept the risks involved.

2. She realizes she has made an irreversible mistake only after it is too late to fix it:
- Antigone's initial confidence and self-assuredness gradually transform into regret and realization of the irreversibility of her choices. She becomes haunted by the consequences of her actions, particularly when she recognizes that she is now forever barred from marrying Haemon and having a family.

3. She is responsible for an unhappy ending for all of the characters:
- The tragic events that unfold after her actions directly or indirectly contribute to the downfall of other characters. For example, when Haemon, her fiancé, learns of her death, he is devastated and takes his own life. This causes further tragic consequences as his mother, Eurydice, upon hearing of his death, becomes overwhelmed with grief and also commits suicide. As a result, Creon is left alone to lament the loss of his family.

To address the counter-argument that Creon is the tragic hero, you could argue:

- While Creon does suffer significant losses and becomes a tragic figure, it is ultimately his own tragic flaw of hubris, or excessive pride, that leads to these losses. His refusal to listen to advice or consider the opinions of others, his rigid adherence to his own laws, and his rejection of divine authority all contribute to his downfall. In contrast, Antigone's choices are driven by a strong sense of moral duty and love for her family, which makes her a more sympathetic and tragic character.

Remember to use quotations from the text as evidence to support your arguments and provide detailed analysis of how these examples demonstrate the characteristics of a tragic hero. Good luck with your essay!
