Lexi and Marie had $250 altogether. After Lexi spent 2/5 of her money and Marie spent $40, they had the same amount of money left. how much money did Lexi have in the beginning ?

let x = amount of money of Lexi
let 250 - x = amount of amount of Marie
then set up the equation:
x - (2/5)x = 250 - x - 40
(3/5)x = 210 - x
(3/5)x + x = 210
(8/5)x = 210
x = 210*(5/8)
x = $ 131.25 (Lexi's money)
250 - x = 118.75 (Marie's money)
