It's only easy if you know the quadratic formula:
x = [12 ± √(144-132)]/6
= (12 ± √12)/6
= 2 ± √3/3
= 1.423 or 2.577
Answer in the book is 6±√3/3
I was able to get to (12 ± √12)/6 but I couldn't figure out how you got the rest.
4x+y=12
6x+8y=8
