Would you expect magnesium or calcium to be the more active metal? Explain your answer in terms of atomic structure.

Calcium is more active.

The two s-orbital outer valence electrons in Ca are farther away than those in Mg. They are therefore less strongly bound to the nucleus and more free to react with nonmetals
