Which of the following statements are true regarding suction filtration? (select all that apply)

a) Product should always be rinsed with cold water
b) The filter flask can be held in place with your hand
c) When filtering is complete you should remove the suction hose and then turn the water off
d) When the water is turned on it passes through a one-way valve, reducing the pressure in the rubber hose
e) Before filtering you should always wet your filter paper with the same solvent used in the recrystallization

I know c) is true. Not sure about the others.

a is not true.

b is not true.
You are correct that c is true.
d? For water aspirators, I don't think a valve is used but I never took one apart to look at the insides. The water IS reduced in the rubber hose. Perhaps Bob Pursley knows. I'll ask him to comment and post.
e is true.

The sentence on D should read, "The water pressure IS reduced in the rubber hose." I ommitted the word pressure.

I would list D as not true, generally. Water traps are often used between the Buchnell Filter and the vacumn source, but I have never seen valves inserted.

To determine which of the statements are true regarding suction filtration, let's break down and analyze each statement:

a) "Product should always be rinsed with cold water": This statement is unrelated to suction filtration. Rinsing with cold water is not a specific requirement for the filtration process. Therefore, it is not true in the context of suction filtration.

b) "The filter flask can be held in place with your hand": This statement is incorrect. When performing suction filtration, it is important to secure the filter flask in place using appropriate clamps or other suitable apparatus. Holding the flask with your hand can introduce safety risks and may disrupt the filtration process. Hence, this statement is false.

c) "When filtering is complete you should remove the suction hose and then turn the water off": This statement is true. After filtration is completed, it is good practice to disconnect the suction hose before turning off the water supply. It prevents any water from accidentally flowing into the filtration setup if the water pressure drops suddenly. So, you are correct that this statement is true.

d) "When the water is turned on it passes through a one-way valve, reducing the pressure in the rubber hose": This statement is true. In suction filtration setups, the water source typically passes through a one-way valve before entering the rubber hose. This valve helps maintain a consistent level of pressure, which creates the suction necessary for effective filtration. Therefore, this statement is true.

e) "Before filtering you should always wet your filter paper with the same solvent used in the recrystallization": This statement is also true. Prior to filtration, it is recommended to wet the filter paper with the same solvent used during the recrystallization process. Wetting the filter paper ensures a proper seal between the paper and the funnel, minimizing the potential for leakage and improving the filtration process. So, this statement is true.

In summary, the true statements regarding suction filtration are:
- c) When filtering is complete you should remove the suction hose and then turn the water off.
- d) When the water is turned on it passes through a one-way valve, reducing the pressure in the rubber hose.
- e) Before filtering you should always wet your filter paper with the same solvent used in the recrystallization.
