**Reiny**, Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 7:15pmremember we can add or subtract only "like" terms

so we have to form common denominators for each type

(1/5)x^2 + (1/10)x^2 which is (3/10)x^2 ...... 1/5 + 1/10 =2/10+1/10

then

(-1/5)x - (1/2)x

= (-2/10)x - (5/10)x = (-7/10)x

and finally

-3/4 + 1/2

= -3/4 + 2/4

= -1/4

(1/5x^2-1/5x-3/4)+(1/10x^2-1/2x+1/2)

= (3/10)x^2 - (7/10)x - 1/4
