1) Britain was unprepared for the use of the terrible destructive modern artillery, machine guns and tanks, and the use of gas and shells durin the attacks.
2) Shell shock was the term used by doctors to allude to the shell explotions they blamed for the frequent cases of psychological disorders among soldiers.
3) The United States joined the war on 2nd April 1917, considering it a crusade to make the world safe for democracy. American participation accelerated the German defeat: on 11th November 1918, Allied and German leaders signed an armistice.
4) President Wilson proposed Fourteen Points to work out the peace treaty and prevent future occasions of war.
5) He devised a plan to set up the League of Nations, an organization in which the representatives of the world's nations would ty to discuss and settle their differences instead of resorting to war.
6) The American Senate, however, voted against permanent involvement in European problems, and the United Stateds never joined the League of Nations.
