If you draw a picture, and imagine that the truncated cone is produced to its vertex V where the diameter is zero, then
height from V to the section at which the diameter is 2"
= 2*4" = 8"
Height of complete cone = 4"+8"=12"
Height of "missing" cone = 8"
Volume of complete cone
= πr²h/3
= 12π(3/2)²/3
= 9π
Volume of "missing" cone
=πr²h/3
=8π(2/2)²/3
=(8/3)π
Therefore volume of the truncated cone
= 9π - (8/3)π
