Christopher Columbus discovered a beautiful tropical island in the Caribbean Sea in 1492. He named this island Hispaniola. In the seventeenth century the island became a French colony, Saint-Domingue. Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803) had encouraged enslaved Africans to be independent of France. They got their freedom in 1804. The people changed the name of Saint-Dominique to the republic of Haiti.
Haiti occupies the western part of the island. The Dominican Republic is the eastern part of the island. Haiti is as large as the state of Maryland, USA. Haitians speak French and Creole. They grow coffee, sugar cane, tobacco, cotton and bananas. Port-au-Prince, the capital is a port and largest city of the Republic of Haiti. There is a national university with a famous medical school. Haiti is a poor country, but art, literature and music of the region are very rich.
