Sometimes if you reword that sentence, it will be far easier.
Fernando read a bedtime story TO Miguel.
When you do that, it's far clearer.
Subject = Fernando
Direct Object or what did he read? a bedtime story
Indirect Object or to WHOM did he read? = Miguel
