All students who attend Madison High School, should do so without the feeling that they will be subject
to harassment or threats based on their clothing. It is their right to feel safe and secure while obtaining an
education and it is the communities’ job to ensure that happens. "Current fashion trends seem to be leaning towards the extreme and in some cases the obscene" (Gilbert, 2010, p. 210). The rising gang problem and the fact that gangs frequently identify themselves by the clothing they wear, further contributes to the clothing problem. As a parent of a child attending the school, I have been informed many times how students were pushed, threatened, or harassed simply because they were wearing the wrong color, size, or type of clothing. These types of incidents have to be reduced and eliminated. By implementing a dress code for the students, where all individuals wear the same type of uniform, the community can take the first step towards providing the proper educational environment.
