Can you please check these sentences for me? I'm unsure about the word choice.

1)Joyce's "Dubliners" all the characters experience a sense of stagnation (paralyses) due to various reasons and are unable to break the chains that bind them.
2) Their inability to act is due mainly to the unhappiness and loneliness caused by an unsuccessful marriage, an unfulfilling job or the lack of friendship.
3) They are tied to their past because of limited cultural and social traditions. However, they are either unware of their limits or accept them passively.
4) At a certain phase of their life they experience an "epiphany" that is a sudden revelation which makes them understand themselves better.
5) However, they don't act upon (I need a synonym) this revelation but passively continue with their lives as before.
6) The music coming from the street organ triggers Eveline's flashback to the night of her mother's death. She is afraid of dying as (like?) a madwoman like her mother after a life of self-sacrifice.
