Can you please check if everything is all right in these sentences I wrote on the second world war.

1) On the 1st of September 1939 the Germans invaded Poland; on the 3rd of September the Western Powers (France and England) declared war on Germany. 2) In April 1940 Hitler’s forces moved into Denmark and Norway; then they invaded Holland and Belgium and entered France.
3) King George VI appointed Prime Minister the Conservative Winston Churchill under whose strong leadership British resistance became extremely determined. The first years were terrible.
4) The evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France was made possible by the heroic help of all the British people; everybody who had a vessel of any kind joined the warships and contributed (?) to bringing most of the English soldiers back home.
5) In June 1940 Italy too declared war on the Western Powers; France capitulated, and the invasion of Great Britain seemed certain.
6) The Germans prepared it by trying to destroy the bases of the Royal Air Force in the south of England.
7) Heavy bomber raids continued day and night on London and other important towns. The Battle of England was won by the pilots of the Royal Air Force, who strenuously attacked the German fighters.
8) It was they who saved England in the terrible summer and autumn of 1940, before winter made invasion impossible.
