there are 80 fourth graders in school of these, 35 were boys. what fractional part of the fourth graders were girls

to get the fractional part of girls, we first subtract 35 from 80 to get the number of girls:
80 - 35 = 45
then we divide this by the total, which is 80:
45/80
reduce to lowest term by dividing both numerator and denominator by the GCF (greatest common factor) which is 5:
45/5 = 9
80/5 = 16
thus 45/80 = 9/16
