Find the area of a rectangle if three of its corners are (-0.1,-3.4), (-7.9,-3.4), and (-0.1,6.8).

You are given 3 points of the rectangle.

You need to find the 4th point.

Rectangle ABCD, labeled clockwise from the bottom horizontal segment.

A(-0.1, -3.4)

B(-7.9, -3.4)

C(-7.9, 6.8)

D(-0.1, 6.8)

Point C was the missing point.

It has the same x coordinate as Point B and the same y coordinate as D.

A = LW

AB = CD = the horizontal segments, the length

BC = DA = the vertical segments, the width

Use the distance formula to find the segment lengths

Distance between AB

A(-0.1, -3.4)

B(-7.9, -3.4)

D(A,B)=sqrt[(xA - xB)^2 + (yA - yB)^2]

D = sqrt[(-0.1+7.9)^2 + (-3.4+3.4)^2]

D = 7.8

Distance between BC

B(-7.9, -3.4)

C(-7.9, 6.8)

D(A,B)=sqrt[(xA - xB)^2 + (yA - yB)^2]

D = sqrt[(-7.9+7.9)^2 + (-3.4-6.8)^2]

D = 10.2

A = LW

A = (7.8)(10.2)
