Let x = the longer piece.

3/5 = x/12

5x = 36

x = 7.2

12 - 7.2 = ?

variable L= length

and we have 12:2 is = 6

and then the ratio 2/3

is 2/3 L=9

check:

12-9=3 If they asking continues answer will be 3

so both sides are make sense

6=2/3(9) check from the 12 feet long we have 12= L+3= 12=12

if this helpful

6= 6
