I believe the sequence should read:
8,12,18, and 27, in which case the common ratio is the quotient of any two consecutive elements, such as:
12/8=1.5,
18/12=1.5, or
27/18=1.5
So the next number is therefore
27*common ratio
=27*1.5
=40.5
And the next number is
40.5*common ratio, ....
