Grade is rise/run, or difference in elevation divided by the horizontal distance.
If the roof rises 1.4' vertically over a horizontal distance of 11.8', the grade is 1.4/11.8=0.1186, or in percents, then multiply the above fraction by 100 to get
1.4/11.8*100=11.86%.
