Thank you very much for your corrections. Can you help me with these sentences, please? Thank you very much.

1)Despite the corruption among the clergy, the church played a fundamental role in the Middle Ages. Actually/In particular/As a matter of fact/In fact (which ones are correct?) it provided consolation for the oppressed and bread for the hungry.
2) Over the back of the apron stage there was the upper stage, where musicians played (better: used to play).
3) Shylock hates Antonio, a merchant friend of Bassanio (?). He tries to kill him but he fails and loses all of (?) his fortune.
4) According to the mind (???) of period, Shakespeare describes Shylock as an evil person. That's because (??) the Jews were descriminated against and suffered (not had) severe disadvantages.
5) They had to work as moneylenders because they weren't allowed to do (take up) any other jobs (job?).
6) They weren't permitted to do any jobs except for moneylending (?).
