Each European group that set up colonies settled in the specific part of the Americas. What are the two facts that lead to that generalization?

The English settled in what is now the U.S. and Canada. The Spanish settled in what is now Mexico, Central America, and South America, with the exception of Brazil and a couple of small coastal countires.
