So, what I found was that both Hammurabi's code and the 10 Abominations were made because it was a necessity, they wanted their people to be orderly, and to continue to have a stable society. If their people broke the Code or the Abominations they would be punished by death or get beaten.

But even more fundamentally, there's the idea of having the laws of a country (kingdom or whatever) written down. Before laws were written down (codified), how do you think people knew what was correct and what was not?
