I really wondered about this: Is there any agreement on the "ideals" expressed in the Declaration of Independence? Remember, Women did not have the vote, Slaves did not have vote, only "propery owners" if they were male. What about Freedoms such as religion ? Were folks then allowed to practice whatever religion they wished.
One has to be careful when looking back in time and interpreting what folks 200 years ago had as ideals. We see them thru our tinted glasses.
No look at the 20th century beginning: trustbusting, populist movements, the rise of labour movements,Jim Crow laws.
