two trains leave at the same time from stations 284 miles apart, traveling toward each other at 33mph and 38 mph respectively. how long will it take them to meet?

Leng of path is product of speed and time.

Leng of path of first train is 33*t

Leng of path of second train is 38*t

Sum of that two path must be 284 miles.

33*t+38*t=71*t
71*t=284 Divide with 71
t=284/71= 4 hours
