A monkey is chained to a stake in the ground. The stake is 2.78 m from a vertical pole, and the chain is 3.48 m long. How high can the monkey climb up the pole?

The chain represents the hyp. of a rt.

triangle. the hor side = 2.78 m and

the height is the ver. side.

x^2 + y^2 = z^2

(2.78)^2 + y^2 = (3.48)^2,

y^2 = (3.48)^2 - (2.78)^2,

y^2 = 12.11 - 7.73,

y^2 = 4.38,

y = 2.1 m = max. distance monkey can climb up pole.
