when different civilizations interact they become more aware how different they are from each other. This also causes one to see the similarities within his or her civilization.
When people couldn't and didn't travel much, civilizations rarely met each other or clashed. Most people throughout history rarely went more than 10 miles from where they were born.
Now that worldwide travel is quick and easy and the media educates us about the world, civilizations have far more opportunity to meet, and therefore, to clash.
