Write and solve an equation to model the situation:
two friends are renting an apartment. they pay the landlord the first months rent. the landlord also requires them to pay an additional half of a month's rent for a security deposit. the total amount they pay the landlord before moving in is $1725. What is the monthly rent?

x + 0.5x = 1725
1.5x = 1725
x = 1725/1.5
