Homework Help: grammar

Is this sentence correct?

I know that he will do the job as best he can.

Or should it be?

I know that he will do the job the best he can.

I think both are grammatically correct, but the second one sounds better. The word "as" is usually used as a conjunction or conjunctive adverb. I think this is the word that makes the first sentence awkward.
