Why do you want to teach a five-year-old to read?

I know of children who learned to read before they started formal training in school. They picked up reading because they were ready and motivated. However, this precosity doesn't always continue through school.

The best preparation for learning to read is to read to the child. When she's ready, she'll realize that those squiggly lines on a page represent words. She'll pretend to read -- and sooner or later she'll see the connection between the words on the page and the spoken words.
