I have to write an essay comparing how fear is used in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm. It is going to be in class tomorrow on my final exam. So far I have my three paragraphs: Fear of outside sources/unknown, fear of self, and fear of others. I have marked pages in my books, but I was wondering if I should select different topics for each body paragraph. I do have evidence and quotes to back it up, just not feeling sure if these topics I chose are very good.

Any help is appreciated :]

thanks!

It seems like you have a solid essay structure with three body paragraphs addressing different aspects of fear in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm. However, if you are not feeling confident about your chosen topics, it might be worth considering alternative options. Here are some suggestions for each paragraph to help you evaluate and potentially revise your plan:

1. Fear of outside sources/unknown:
- How fear is instilled by the characters' lack of knowledge about the outside world or external threats.
- The portrayal of fear in response to the mysterious "beast" in Lord of the Flies and the threat of neighboring farms in Animal Farm.
- The impact of fear of the unknown on the characters' decision-making and behavior.

2. Fear of self:
- Explore the characters' fear of their own capabilities, actions, or potential for evil.
- Discuss the descent into savagery and the fear of losing one's civilized identity in Lord of the Flies.
- Analyze the self-doubt and fear of their own power that arise in the animals in Animal Farm.

3. Fear of others:
- Examine how fear is fueled by the presence of different groups or individuals in both novels.
- Compare the fear of the "others" (such as Jack's tribe and the neighboring farm owners) in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm.
- Analyze the manipulation of fear of others for control and dominance.

Remember, it's important to choose topics that you have enough evidence and quotes to support. Consider the depth of analysis you can provide for each topic and select the ones that allow you to showcase your understanding of the texts and demonstrate your ability to make meaningful comparisons.

Good luck with your essay and your final exam! If you need further assistance or have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Great job on starting your essay and organizing your thoughts into three different categories! Comparing the use of fear in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm can be a fascinating task. As for your concerns about the topics for each body paragraph, let's discuss how to evaluate and select the most effective topics.

1. Fear of outside sources/unknown: This topic seems appropriate as it allows you to explore how fear is used to control the characters in both novels through a sense of uncertainty and the unknown. Make sure to provide specific examples and quotes from the texts that highlight this theme.

2. Fear of self: This topic can be further divided into the fear of personal flaws, guilt, or the deterioration of moral values. Analyzing how fear influences the characters' perceptions of themselves would offer an interesting perspective on the novels. Again, provide textual evidence to support your claims.

3. Fear of others: This topic focuses on how fear is harnessed by individuals or groups to manipulate, oppress, or maintain power over others. The characters' fear of each other in both novels can be explored in terms of the impact on their relationships and their collective behavior. Be sure to back up your analysis with relevant quotations.

In terms of choosing different topics for each body paragraph, this can help create variety and ensure a comprehensive analysis by covering different dimensions of fear in the two novels. It is crucial to examine how fear operates differently and/or similarly in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm.

Remember, even with strong evidence and quotes, the key to a successful essay is a clear thesis statement, well-structured paragraphs, and effective transitions between ideas. Good luck with your final exam!
