Homework Help: Religion

I have read the chapter on Hinduism, in a book called Living Religion by Mary Fisher, but I am having difficulty finding the answer to the following question: What are the cultural and societal influences that have made Hinduism vital to the region in which it originated? Have I overread, can you put me on the right track for the answer. thanks
