If the length of the board is 5 feet, we can immediately tell that it should be cut into two pieces, one 3 feet, and the other 2.
If the length is 19 feet, we can increase each piece by the proportion of 19/5, thus the lengths are:
3*(19/5) and 2*(19/5) respectively.
