**DrBob222**, Friday, April 30, 2010 at 7:57pm5-x over 3 minus x-2 over 4 = 5/12

Is this what you meant?

(5-x/3)-(x-2/4)=5/12

Multiply everything by 12.

12(5-x/3)-12(x-2/4)=12(5/12)

remove parentheses

20-4x-3x+6=5

combine terms

26-7x=5

-7x=5-26

-7x=-21

multiply by -1

7x=21

divide both sides by 7

7x/7 = 21/7

x=3

CHECK IT:

(5-x/3)-(x-2/4)=5/12

(5-3/3)-(3-2/4) = 5/12

(2/3)-(1/4) = 5/12

common denominator is 12.

(8/12)-(3/12) = 5/12

(8-3/12) = 5/12

5/12 = 5/12

done.
