An advertisement states that eight thermometers cost $12.42 minus a 3% discount. Dr. wants to order a dozen to take advantage of the savings, sales tax is 5%. What would the cost be? Is my math right? I divided 8 by $12.42 and got $1.55 p/thermometer. 12*$1.55 would cost $18.60 for 12 minus 3% disc total cost would be $18.04. add 5% sales tax total cost $18.94

Since you probably used your calculator, why not carry all the digits and only round off your final answer.

that way, I got $18.97

here is my sequence ....

12.42

÷

8

x

12

=

x

.97

=

x

1.05 = 18.9746

so $18.97
