Republicans tend to be conservative and want to preserve the status quo. Generally they oppose raising taxes and encourage individuals to provide for themselves.
Democrats tend to be liberal and are open to trying new ideas. Generally they want the government to provide more services for the people, even though it may mean higher taxes.
