Can you check the grammar in the following sentences, please?

1) Henry II succeeded the last Norman King, Stephen. He contributed to improving the military service and the administration of justice through reforms.
2) He reduced the power of the barons by introducing professional soldiers.
3) Henry II set up rules with the purpose to control the Clergy. He wanted to defend his own interest of nominating the bishops.
4)John Lackland was forced to sign a document in which the king agreed to ask the approval of a Council of advisors before imposing taxes.
5)No men could be arrested or harmed in any way unless he had been judged by a court of his peers.
6) I went to Midnight Mass (or to the ..)
7) This village offers a lot of skiing (?) facilities.
8) My mum gave me a pair of pyjams (?) as a Christmas present (or "for Christmas"?)
