How about telling about the Gold Rush. You could feature a few of the miners, where they came from, whether they found much gold, whether they stayed or went home again.
Btw -- two of my ancestors on different sides of the family went from Indiana and Illinois to the Gold Rush. Apparently they both found enough gold to buy farms back home. I know one went out by oxcart with an uncle. The other had a gold brooch and rings made for his wife and daughters. My daugher inherited one of the rings. It's beautiful and she wears it proudly.
