Ms Sue, I have to tell why I think that the 5 athletes who held the olympic flame in the opening ceremony were suitable choices for this honour, I don't know why. I only think that they are very famous and outstanding, and have a lot of fans. I think that they were suitable for this honour because of their popularity.

I think each was chosen because he or she represented the spirit of the Olympics.

This site will help you -- and you may need to look up these torch carriers for more information.

The Lighting of the Cauldron

Paraolympic gold medalist, humanitarian and activist Rick Hansen carried the Olympic flame into the building. He passed it along to two-time Olympic gold medalist Catriona Le May Doan, who passed it to British Columbia-born basketball player Steve Nash. Nash passed the torch to "Canada's Female Athlete of the 20th Century," former Olympic skier Nancy Greene, who then passed it to Canadian hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky

Ms. Sue what does it mean by have they helped promote sport?

Promote sport means to work to assure that sports represent good sportsmanship behaviour and bring lots of spectators to the games.

have these 5 athletes done anything like that?

Four of the five torch bearers are briefly described above. You may need to find some information about Steve Nash. Go to the website above and you'll find links to more information about each of them.

From the information you read, you can decide if each of them represents admirable sportsmanship.

I want to answer in short form.

Thay have all helped to promote the sports by showing up for the athletes and giving them all the support they can. They were all very supportive towards all the athletes and are continuing this progress.

You can do better than that, Sara.

Do you think these athletes were suitable choices? Do they represent the best athletes of Canada?

They helped promote the sports by exemplifying hard work, skill, and sportsmanship.

Would you have chosen other athletes?
