Why are models useful?
a) models work exactly like the things they present
b) Models are the first stage in any experiment
c) models are better than charts or graphs
d) models are the first step in creating a prototype
I don't like the choices. d) is probably the best answer, but models are useful because it helps us clarify our thinking on a process or system. Models can be altered rather cheaply, and they can help us realize the variables and the effects of the variables. Wind Tunnel models have long been used to suggest design changes. Mathematical models are universally used in engineering, creating equations that represent transfer functions (input to output), control functions (as in how much each valve should be turned), and feedback functions. The first thing engineers turn to is a math model.
In summary, models clarify our thinking process, and forms the basis for creating a prototype of the actual system.
