The social movements I've noted:
* increase of social websites from virtually nothing
* fear of losing jobs and money
* trend toward very large Christian churches
* increased awareness of the African-American vote. (Many African-Americans registered and voted for the first time in 2008.)
* concern about affordable healthcare for everyone
* heightened airport security after 9/11
* move toward legalizing gay and lesbian marriages
