A milling machine has a rotating tool bit. The table moves in the x and y directions, linear. Your answer is correct.
Note that they carefully said WOOD lathe where you can move the bit all kinds of ways with your hand. With a metal lathe the bit is usually constrained to move back and forth especially if cutting threads.
