Homework Help: French

We just learned about the pronouns leur and lui. I really don't understand them but I attempted the homework so could you please check these thanks.

Part 1 Directions: Rewrite each sentence replacing the italicized words with a pronoun. (the italicized word I will put in parentheses)

1. Le médecin parle (à Caroline.)
Answer: Le médecin lui parle.

2. Le médecin parle (à Grégoire.)
Answer: Le médecin lui parle.

3. Le malade pose une questioin (au pharmacien.)
Answer: Le malade lui pose une question.

4. Le malade pose une question (à la pharmacienne.)
Answer: Le malade lui pose une question.

5. Le pharmacien doone des médicaments (au malade.)
Answer: Le pharmacien leur donne.

6. Le pharmacien donne des médicaments (à la malade.)
Answer: Le pharmacien leur donne.

Part 2
Directions: Rewrite the sentences replacing the italicized words with an object pronoun. Italicized words are in parentheses.

1. Je téléphone (à mes copains.)
Answer: Je leur téléphone.

2. Je parle (à Stéphanie.)
Answer: Je lui parle.

3. Je parle (à Christian) aussi.
Answer: Je lui parle.

4. Je demande (à mes amis) comment ça va.
Answer: Je leur demande comment ça va.

5. Je dis (à mes cousines) de me téléphoner.
Answer: Je leur dis de me téléphoner.

6. Je dis au revoir (à mes cousines.)
Answer: Je leur dis au revoir.

Part 3
Directions: Rewrite the sentences replacing the italicized word(s) with les or leur.

1. Je téléphone (à mes amis.)
Answer: Je leur téléphone.

2. Je parle (à mes amis) en français.
Answer: Je leur parle en français.

3. J'aime bien (mes amis.)
Answer: J'aime les bien.

4. J'invite (mes amis) à une fête.
Answer: Je les invite à une fête.

5. Je demande (à mes amis) d'être à l'heure.
Answer: Je leur demande d'être à l'heure.

6. Je donne mon adresse (à mes amis.)
Answer: Je leur donne mon adresse.

Part 4
Directions: Answer in the negative using a pronoun. Italicized word gets replaced by the way and it's in parentheses also.

1. Tu invites (Laurence)?
Answer: Je ne lui invites pas.

2. Tu vas téléphoner (à ton copain)?
Answer: Je ne lui vais pas téléphoner.

3. Tu vas voir (tes cousins)?
Answer: Je ne vais leur pas voir.

4. Tu donnes ton numéro de téléphone (à tes amis)?
Answer: Je ne leur donnes pas mon numéro de téléphone.

5. Tu vas expliquer ton problème (à tes parents)?
Answer: Je ne vais leur pas expliquer mon problème.

Excellent until #5.
lui = to/for/at/from him, her,it
leur = to/for/at/from them (people or things)

These are 3rd person singular and plural INDIRECT Object Pronouns. That means that one of the words "to/for/at/from" will either be understood or stated.

Now, if you look at #5 (au pharmacien) it is still to ONE person = lui. Do not let the fact that the direct object noun (des medicaments) is there.

5. lui donne (check spelling there)
6. This is the same example of giving something TO ONE PERSON = lui

Part 2 is perfect (parfait!)

#3 = when in doubt ALWAYS put any object pronoun (be it direct or indirect) directly in front of the conjugated verb. That is called "playing it safe" because you will only be wrong with an affirmative command or when the object is the object of an infinitive.
3. Je les aime bien.

Part 4 = Prends garde! Watch out! Now you have direct-objects in with indirect-objects AND objects of infinitives.

1. First of all you are answering the question. Are YOU inviting? I am not.
Next question: do you have an indirect object (to/for/at/from someone?) NO. Therefore you have a direct object pronoun. I am not inviting him. = Je ne l'invite (note ending on verb agrees with "je") pas.

2. First question: Are you GOING to him? NO. Is it to telephone him? YES. It IS the indrect-object pronoun but it is the object of the infinitive and not of the verb aller. Je ne vais pas lui téléphoner.

3. This is similar in the first question, BUT it is not an indirect-object pronoun; it is a direct-object pronoun. Je ne vais pas les voir. (note that to/for/at/from is NOT here)

4. The only thing wrong is the verb "donner" MUST agree with "Je" the subject = Je donne = Je ne leur donne pas...

5. The negative (ne...pas) works around the conjugated verb. Je ne vais pas leur expliquer...
