Hunter gave his sister $3. He earned $12, then he paid $6 for lunch. Now Hunter has $18. How much money did Hunter have to start with?

I'm confused. Please help.

He earned $12 and spent $9, so he gained $3. 18 - 3 = 15.

He must have started with $15.
