The equation y=-1777x+27,153 can be used to predict the number y of gun deaths in the United states x years after 2000, that is, x=0 corresponds to 2000, x=2 corresponding to 2002, x=4 corresponds to 2004, and so on. Predict the number of gun deaths in 2004 and 2008. In what year will the number of gun deaths be 9383?

I am going to write (t-2000) instead of x where t is the year.

y = -1777 (t-2000) + 27,153

if t = 2004 then

y = -1777 (4) + 27,153

y = -7108 + 37,153

y = 30045

Now if y = 9383

9383 = -1777 (t-2000) + 27,153

1777(t-2000) = 27153-9383

1777(t-2000) = 17770

t - 2000 = 10

t = 2010
