Suppose you are playing a word game with seven distinct
letters. How many seven-letter words can there be?

I assume you mean by distinct that they are each different.
Using all seven letters in a word, there is a maximum
7*6*5*4*3*2*1
Of course it is more complicated, vowels, consonants, and all that.
