The diameter of the earth is about 7.6 x 10^3 miles. What is the linear velocity of a person, on the equator, in feet per second?

  • physics - ,

    R = (7.6/2)(10^3 miles) (5280 ft/mile)
    R = 20*10^6 ft
    w =angular velocity= 2 pi radians in 24 hours
    w = (2 pi rad/24hr)(1 hr/3600sec)
    = 7.27 *10^-5 rad/s
    v = w R = 7.27*10^-5 * 2*10^7
    = 1450 ft/s
